Mexico Wednesday Update

Hola hermanas y hermanos!

As I write this update from Mexico it is 8:00pm on Wednesday night. The last few days have flown by as our team has worked hard from the time we leave in the morning until we crash in our beds at night. We have had the privaledve of working with a different church each day.

In Monday we were outside the city working among 850,000 people who live in concrete houses built on top of each other on the side of a mountain. After preparing several hundreds gospels of John to pass out we teamed up with members from the small church there and went door-to-door passing out gospels and inviting the people we met to the worship service we were having that night. To say the streets are steeply inclined would be a severe understatement. This area is 7,000 ft above sea level and we could feel it. Arlinda and I were out of breath after the first street and were thankful our church partners were too. We ate lunch with the church there and then did vbs and had a worship service. I hope we were an encouragement to the small church there as they have been experiencing persecution in their community.

On tuesday we went into Mexico City and fed over 400 homeless men and women at a shelter. It was a testimony to the Church working for a common goal as we and the Baptist church we were working with partnered with a Korean Presbyterian church to feed the homeless in a Pentocoastal church's building. Carlos preached the gospel and all there heard the gospel. The service ended with the dedication of a 3 wk old baby (his dad, mom, and sibling are all homeless). On Tuesday night we ministered at a rural church. Now when I say rural I mean we had to walk 1/2 mile down a narrow trail to get to the church. The houses and church in this area are only assessible by foot. This was quite an adventure when we left in the dark! This area was very poor, even by Mexican standards. The church was grateful for our service and we were blessed by their hospitality.

On Wednesday we did gospel saturation again with a different church outside the city. We found several receptive people although the vast majority of the people there are Catholic. The streets here were no better than Monday's puebla and by tonight our feet and legs are done. At the vbs tonight we were told to expect around 25 kids and 80 showed up. Summer, Danielle and the vbs crew did a great job adjusting and with Carlos' help they all heard the gospel.

Our team is doing a great job ministering to the people here and adapting to whatever has come along. Several tears have already been shed as we see the lostness of the people here and want them to know Christ. Satan has used religion to blind the eyes of the people to the truth of the gospel. Please pray for us as we go out again tomorrow door-to-door that God would lead us to people he is drawing to Himself.

Mexico update

We made it to Mexico with no casualties except for one suitcase. It still hasn't shown up but we're praying hard (Amber is praying especially hard!). We spent the afternoon resting (we left the BX at 3am) and then had a fabulous dinner of what tasted like the best tostados you've ever eaten. Apparently Travis & Danielle have told the people here that we eat like pigs becuase they kept bringing out food until we were all about to burst.

The entire team (plus Travis & Danielle) is staying at a house owned by an older Mexican believer who lives alone. She is very regal and kind and reminds me of the godfather (minus the mafia). When we returned to the house for dinner we found the electricity off so our dinner and orientation was done by candlelight. I wondered how we would wake up on time this morning but I didn't know a rooster lives in the backyard. Unfortunately the rooster's clock is wrong and he woke us up around 4am. Around 6 the powers came back on in time for us to shower and get ready for church.

The morning worship service was great. The worship was lively and was led by a band and worship dancers. Summer and Amber have already requested we add this feature to our worship services so I'm sending them to Bryan :) After 1.5 hours of singing, Carlos preached. I'm not sure what he said but it looked like he preached a great message j/k. He preached that Jesus is God's word incarnate, theBible is God's word written, and the Spirit is God's word internalized, at least that's my translation.

After the morning service we ate lunch that the church prepared. I think it was potluck and we were the ones who were lucky. I'm not sure what all we ate but it was delicious. Beans, rice, mole', beef, tortillas and vegetables were on my plate.

There is no cell service or Internet access where we are staying so updates may be scarce. Everyone is in good health and is working hard together. Travis & Danielle are naturals and you would never know they have only been here a short time. Pray for the team tomorrow as we go door-to-door doing gospel saturation in preparation of the worship service tomorrow night.

We serve a great God who sent his son to die for people in Chattanooga and Mexico City.
